1. About the research
Voltra Energy Inc. ("Voltra," "we," "us") conducts research on how distributed energy resources — including solar, batteries, electric vehicles, and heat pumps — interact with residential electrical systems and the grid. Your participation helps us build better tools for energy management, grid reliability, and clean energy integration.
Participation is voluntary. You can withdraw at any time, for any reason, without penalty.
2. The Equipment
Equipment provided on loan. Voltra is providing you with energy monitoring equipment (the "Equipment"), which may include a circuit-level energy meter, current transformers (CTs), voltage reference connections, network equipment, and related materials.
Equipment remains Voltra property. The Equipment is provided to you on a loaner basis for the duration of your participation. Title to the Equipment remains with Voltra at all times. You are not purchasing the Equipment, and it is not a gift.
Installation. The Equipment may be installed in your electrical panel by an approved installer by Voltra. You agree to provide reasonable access to your electrical panel and home network for installation and any needed maintenance.
Your responsibilities.
- Do not relocate, modify, disassemble, or interfere with the Equipment
- Notify Voltra promptly if the Equipment appears damaged, stops working, or if you experience any electrical issues
- Do not allow unauthorized third parties to service or remove the Equipment
- If you sell your home or move, notify Voltra at least 30 days in advance so we can arrange equipment removal
Equipment removal. At the end of your participation (for any reason), Voltra will arrange for a licensed electrician to remove the Equipment at Voltra's cost. You agree to allow reasonable access for removal.
Reasonable wear and accidental damage. You are not responsible for normal wear and tear or accidental damage to the Equipment. You may be responsible for replacement cost if the Equipment is damaged due to tampering, modification, or neglect.
3. Data Collection
By participating, you authorize Voltra to collect the following data from your home:
Electrical measurement data: Energy use and generation at the circuit level, measured by the installed equipment. This includes whole-home electricity use, solar generation (if applicable), EV charging (if applicable), HVAC operation, water heater operation, and other monitored circuits.
Contextual device data (only if applicable and with your authorization): Data from connected devices such as smart thermostats, solar inverter monitoring systems, battery storage systems, or electric vehicle charging equipment. You will be asked to authorize each connection separately.
Utility data (only if you authorize): If you grant access via Green Button Connect My Data or a similar service, Voltra will receive electricity usage data from your utility's smart meter.
Environmental data: Weather and solar irradiance data for your geographic area, collected from public sources (NOAA, Environment Canada, NREL).
Household survey data: Information you provide about your home, appliances, and energy-using equipment through initial and annual surveys. Participation in surveys is voluntary.
Service and operations data: Diagnostic information about the Equipment itself, including connectivity status, firmware version, and error logs, used to maintain service quality.
Data we do NOT collect:
- Audio or video recordings from your home
- Contents of phone calls, messages, or other communications
- Location data beyond your home address
- Financial account information
- Biometric data
- Data from non-connected personal devices
4. How We Use Your Data
We use the data collected to:
- Conduct research on residential energy use, distributed energy resources, and grid integration

Breach notification: In the event of a data breach that creates a real risk of significant harm to you, Voltra will notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as required by PIPEDA. We will provide information about the nature of the breach, the steps we are taking to mitigate it, and the steps you can take to protect yourself.
Cross-border data transfers: Voltra stores and processes participant data on servers located in United States and Canada.
When your data is transferred outside Canada or the United States, it may be subject to the laws of the destination country, including potential access by foreign law enforcement or governmental authorities under legal process. Voltra takes reasonable measures to ensure that contractual and technical safeguards are in place to protect your data.

5. Your Privacy
De-identification. Before any data leaves Voltra's internal research systems — whether for publication, shared with research partners, or incorporated into commercial products — it is de-identified. This means direct identifiers (your name, address, account information) are removed or replaced with anonymized codes.
Re-identification risk. We acknowledge that high-resolution energy data can theoretically be re-identified if combined with other data sources. We take reasonable precautions to prevent this and do not attempt to re-identify participants.
Data security. We store your data on secure servers with access controls, encryption at rest and in transit, and regular security audits. We follow reasonable industry practices to protect against unauthorized access.
Data sharing restrictions. Your identifiable personal information is shared only:
- With Voltra personnel directly involved in the research
- With service providers acting on our behalf under confidentiality obligations
- When required by law (court order, regulatory request, law enforcement)
- With your explicit consent
Canadian participants: Your participation is governed by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy law.
California participants: You have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what information we collect, the right to delete, and the right to opt out of sale (we do not sell your information).
6. Your Rights and Choices
You have the right to:
- Access your data. Request a copy of the data Voltra has collected from your home.
- Correct your data. Request correction of inaccurate survey or metadata.
- Delete your data. Request deletion of your personal information, subject to legal retention requirements and the understanding that de-identified research data incorporated into studies cannot be reversed.
- Withdraw from the study. End your participation at any time, for any reason, without penalty.
- Opt out of specific data collections. Decline to authorize thermostat, inverter, or utility data sharing while remaining in the study for electrical data only.

Publications. Research findings using aggregated or de-identified data may be published in academic journals, conference proceedings, technical reports, and commercial materials. Your individual data will not be identified in any publication.
Aggregated data rights. Voltra retains the right to use aggregated and de-identified data derived from your participation in perpetuity, including for commercial purposes, even after you withdraw from the study.
12. Changes to This Agreement
We may update this agreement from time to time. Material changes will be communicated to you at least 30 days before they take effect, giving you the opportunity to withdraw if you disagree with the changes. Continued participation after the effective date of changes constitutes acceptance.
13. Termination
